NEW DELHI: The launch of `Swift' by India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Udyog, on Wednesday will create history of sorts for the Indian automobile engineering industry. For the first time, Indian engineers have been involved in the design and development of a `global car', already launched in Europe recently. About 25 engineers from Maruti toiled with their counterparts in Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation, Maruti's major stake holder, for almost two years to develop Suzuki's latest and Maruti's first world car `Swift'. "While Swift's international styling was common across manufacturing plants, an important task for the Indian engineers was to incorporate elements that are essential for the Indian market," said C. L. Bhola, an engineer involved in the project.
