BIDAR: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) has opposed the introduction of the semester system saying that Gulbarga University has not yet made enough preparations for its implementation. Teachers' posts are vacant in over 80 per cent of the colleges affiliated to the university. These colleges also have a shortage of textbooks, laboratory facilities and other infrastructure. Conducting an examination a year is becoming difficult for the university. There is no proper timetable for admissions and examinations are often postponed owing to question paper leaks. The university should first take steps to provide these facilities to colleges and then bring in systemic changes, ABVP members said in a memorandum to the Government. They have urged the university to introduce changes only after discussing the issue with experts on education, students, and their parents. They have also expressed apprehensions that the semester system may not leave students with time for extra-curricular activities. They have threatened to launch a district-wide agitation if the system is continued.
