Nagmani, 6 others expelled from LJP

Priority to cleanse party of vacillating elements: Paswan

NEW DELHI L: ok Jan Shakti Party (LJP) chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Tuesday announced the expulsion from the party of seven leaders including five who were elected MLAs on the LJP ticket to the Bihar Assembly in the recent elections.

These included former MP Nagmani and his wife Munna Shukla, who allegedly played an active role in "persuading" a dozen LJP MLAs to shift to Jharkhand, and the presidents of the Bihar LJP and its youth wing.

President Abdul Kalam on Monday signed a Proclamation for the dissolution of the House.

Mr. Paswan said his immediate priority was to strengthen the party and cleanse it of vacillating elements. "What is the hurry? The elections are not going to be held tomorrow. I will first strengthen my party and then think of alliances. There are still two months to go before alliances start getting finalised."

The next priority would be to consolidate the Dalit-Muslim vote in his favour. "I sacrificed the Deputy Chief Minister's post that would have gone to my brother in order to make a Muslim Chief Minister. Many Muslims from Bihar are calling up to congratulate me on my firm stand and sacrifice. On the other hand, the Rashtriya Janata Dal has treated Muslims like bonded labour. I will win double the number of seats we won last time," he said.

After the recent elections, the LJP had 29 MLAs in the 243-member house.

Mr. Paswan indicated that he would prefer the Congress to take the lead in finalising a seat-sharing arrangement among the United Progressive Alliance allies and supporting parties.

"I have cordial relations with the Congress and it is for that party to decide on tie-ups. Sonia Gandhi as UPA chairperson will always try to carry all the constituents together," Mr. Paswan added.
