Heat wave back: Kothagudem reels at 49.5 deg. Celsius

KOTHAGUDEM: Scorching temperature is threatening to affect mining operations in the coal belt. The district administration had an emergency meeting with officials in Kothagudem division as temperature touched 49.5 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

Almost all the streets in the coal town wore a deserted look with people staying indoors till late in the evening. A spokesperson of the Singareni Collieries Company said the heat wave would have a bearing on the mining operations in the opencast mines around the town. Mining operations in the underground mines were more or less normal. The occupancy in the day services of the RTC originating from Kothagudem came down considerably.

The District Revenue Officer, H. Shankar Chowhan, said workers engaged in the Food-for-Work programme would be given rest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Heat spell in Telangana

Hyderabad Special Correspondent writes: Adilabad, Karimnagar, Medak and Nizamabad were under heat spell for the day. According to a forecast issued by the Met Office here, Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts would experience heat wave conditions on Wednesday.

Day temperatures rose in Rayalaseema and at a few places in coastal Andhra. The recordings for the day were (in deg. C): Nellore 40.5, Vijayawada airport 40.6, Bhadrachalam 42.9, Hakimpet airport 41.4, Hyderabad airport 41.5, Khammam 41.8, Mahabubnagar 41.8, Medak 44.2, Nalgonda 44.3, Ramagundam 44.7, Anantapur 41.5, Arogyavaram 40, Cuddapah 42.7, Kurnool 42.5, Nandyal 43.5 and Tirupati airport 43.
