Basketball
Coimbatore: Kerala State Electricity Board (Thiruvananthapuram) marched into the quarterfinals with a 72-50 win over local hope Rajalakshmi SC in the opening fixture of the 47th All-India basketball tournament for men, for the Nachimuthu Gounder Cup, at the VOC Park Corporation Sports Complex courts here on Tuesday. The Kerala team was served well by Bobit Mathew who finished with 34 points. Ram Kumar (28) came up with a gallant effort for Rajalakshmi. Tirupur BC made it to the last eight stage without a sweat as its opponent South Central Railway (Secunderabad) opted to stay out of the tournament.
Rude shock
The six-day event suffered a jolt with three teams SCR, Western Railway (Mumbai) and Kerala Presidents Five (Thrissur) pulling out at the last minute. INS Shivaji (Lonawala), which made a surprise entry into the semifinal league of the ongoing all-India tournament at Karur, also could not make it for its opening match against YMCA. However, the organisers have postponed its match for Wednesday. The results: KSEB 72 (Bobit Mathew 34) bt Rajalakshmi SC (Coimbatore) 50 (Ram Kumar 28). Sports Reporter
