NEW DELHI: The wait for a new Vice-Chancellor for Delhi University may have just got longer with the President, A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, in his capacity as the university's Visitor seeking more names from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) which in turn has asked the Search Committee to propose more names to the existing list. Prof. Deepak Nayyar's term as Delhi University Vice-Chancellor ended on May 16. Four names had been proposed initially by the Search Committee headed by Justice P.N.Bhagwati with historian Romila Thapar and Abid Husain as the members nominated by the University's Executive Council. This included two of Delhi University's own senior academic members and two from outside the campus. While the Director of South Campus, Deepak Paintal, and Political Science Department's Neera Chandoke were the candidates proposed from within the University, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood and Prof. P. Balaram of the Indian Institute of Sciences are also in the fray. With Prof. Balaram recently being appointed as the Director of IIS, the chances of his selection had been seen as very low.
