Kasaragod lags behind in development

Staff Reporter

Tourism development projects yet to pick up pace

KASARAGOD: Even as Kasaragod was created 21 years ago on May 24, 1984, the district lags behind in terms of development and infrastructure facilities.

There has been an acute drinking water crisis. Neither the implementation of various drinking water projects or propagation of rainwater harvesting was able to save the situation. And in some places, it is saline water that is being supplied through the taps. The district panchayat commissioned as many as 44 drinking water projects this week, few of which were inaugurated today.

Endosulfan issue

The district has been in the limelight with the issue of the dreaded pesticide, Endosulfan. The comprehensive treatment-cum-rehabilitation package, announced by the Chief Minister has not materialised so far.

The proposed project to transform Kumbla panchayat as a model tourist panchayat is yet to take place. The Bekal fort development project has also been progressing at a snail's pace. This is despite handing over of land for development to three majors firms in the hospitality industry. The development of the beautiful and long beach in Pallikkara to facilitate beach tourism is yet to take place.

On the industrial front, it is once again a gloomy picture. A new mini- industrial part at Seethangoli is the only bright point in this picture. Almost all units at the Ananthapuram industrial estate had closed down besides the closing down of traditional industries. The work of the proposed mini fishing harbours at Cheruvathur, Kasaba and Manjeswaram is yet to commence.

The visit of the Director General of Police and his directives to his subordinates has given the much-required boost to policing in the district. But the Excise department has not been able to perform well in curbing the flow of spurious liquor from neighbouring Karnataka. The lack of a Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal has been a major handicap in the legal disposal system in the district.

The fall in the price of areca has put a question mark on the livelihood of thousands of areca growers in the district. The absence of enough day trains and demand for extension of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kannur Express up to Kasaragod and introduction of an inter-city express between Kannur and Mangalore is yet to materialise.

Almost all the departments and institutions such as panchayats and others are facing staffing problems following reluctance of employees to serve in the district.
