KASARAGOD: The District Panchayat president, E. Padmavathy, on Tuesday flagged off the `Jala suraksha yatra' launched under the aegis of the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad on the new bus stand premises. The parishad stressed the need for declaring drinking water as a human right and wanted the Government to enact a legislation making water resources public property. The parishad want the Government to frame a people's water policy and take over the responsibility of drinking water supply. The destruction of natural and rich water resources owing to lack of vision was the prime reason for State turning into a water-scarce region. Reclamation of paddy fields, demolition of hills and indiscriminate sand- mining had been causing irreparable damage to natural water resources, the Parishad leaders said. The rally, which is aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of drinking water resources, will conclude in Kannur on May 26.
