AT HOME: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, addressing a public meeting at Jammalamadugu on Tuesday.
CUDDAPAH: Diversion of Krishna waters was imperative to end drought in the four districts of the Rayalaseema region as well as Prakasam and Nellore, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said on Tuesday. Addressing a public meeting near the Sri Narapura Venkateswara Swamy temple at Jammalamadugu on the second day of his tour of Cuddapah district, he said plans were formulated to provide Godavari water in addition to Krishna water to Nagarjunasagar and Krishna delta ayacuts. Excess Godavari water was flowing unutilised into the sea, he lamented.
Plans on anvil
The Government was evolving plans to liberate the drought-hit farmers of Rayalaseema region, Dr. Reddy stated. Mylavaram reservoir has no scope to get Tungabhadra water and hence water could be only drawn for it from Pennar river. The Government launched the Mylavaram project modernisation works costing Rs. 150 crores with a view to irrigate an ayacut of 60,000 acres, he said. Diversion of Krishna water from the Srisailam reservoir was inevitable as the Mylavaram reservoir failed to get any inflows during the last four years, the Chief Minister said. Works on the Galeru Nagari Sujala Sravanthi were on to irrigate the ayacut in Kamalapuram constituency.
Takes dig at TDP
The project extension works would begin in July/August to provide irrigation to Cuddapah, Rajampet and Kodur segments, he said. Dr. Reddy promised completion of the Handri Neeva, Jharikona and Veligallu projects on a war footing. Taking a dig at the Telugu Desam Party rule, he said hardly 50 per cent of works on the Telugu Ganga project taken up in 1983 were completed and the project would have dragged on for another two decades had the TDP regained power in the last elections. His Government took up Telugu Ganga works on a war footing to complete it in two years. It would irrigate ayacuts and meet the drinking water needs of Mydukur, Badvel and Brahmamgari Matham areas, he said. Assuring mitigation of the woes of handloom weavers in Jammalamadugu constituency, the Chief Minister promised to tax hank yarn and procurement of woven cloth by APCO. The Government targeted disbursal of Rs. 300 crores as loans to artisans. He assured construction of 1,000 pucca houses in Jammalamadugu segment. The Cuddapah MP, Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy and others participated.
