Heat wave continues in North India

Hisar hottest zone in the region

CHANDIGARH: Heat wave continued to sweep the plains of north India on Tuesday with maximum temperatures hovering around 40 degree Celsius. Hisar at 42.6 degree Celsius was the hottest zone in the region. Ambala in Haryana also had a hot day recording a high of 41 degree Celsius while the temperature at Karnal touched 39.6 C, according to the Meteorological Department here. At Patiala, the maximum settled at 41 degree Celsius. Ludhiana and Amritsar also registered hot day recording near similar highs at 40.6 degree Celsius and 40.4 degree Celsius, respectively. Shimla had a pleasant day at 26.8 degree Celsius, which was still three degrees above the normal range. Bhuntar and Sundernagar recorded maximum temperatures of 33.2 degree Celsius and 33.6 degree Celsius, respectively. Srinagar, however, had a cold day as the mercury there plummeted by five degrees below normal to record 21.2 degree Celsius, the Met said.

Two more lives lost

An intense heat wave sweeping the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh claimed two more lives during the last 24 hours, as Jhansi ended up being the hottest place in Uttar Pradesh.

Reports from Mahoba district of the Bundelkhand region said here that Shiv Prasad and Halki Bai died due to intense heat in the Ajnar and Turra Puragarh areas of the district respectively during the past 24 hours. With this, the death toll in the district due to the heat wave has reached five, reports added.

Meanwhile the State Weather Office said in Lucknow that the maximum temperature across the State hovered between 38 and 45 degrees Celsius, with Jhansi at 45 degrees being the hottest and Gorakhpur with 38 degrees staying relatively cool.

Light rains occurred in some places of Lucknow and Kanpur divisions, they added.

Among the other divisions of the State Allahabad and Kanpur recorded a maximum temperature of 43 degree Celsius, Varanasi and Lucknow stood at 42 degrees, Sultanpur at 41 degrees and Baharaich at 40 degrees.

The weatherman has forecast mainly dry weather with possibility of dust-storm/thunder-storm accompanied by squalls at isolated places in the State during the next 24 hours. PTI/UNI
