Protest in U.P. against Bihar House dissolution

Governor flayed for taking `anti-people' decision

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday staged demonstrations across the State to protest against the dissolution of the Bihar Assembly.

State Party spokesperson H. N. Dixit said here that demonstrations were staged by party workers at all the district headquarters and tehsils.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Lalji Tandon led the protest in the State capital in the form of a procession which was taken out from the State party headquarters.

Later addressing party workers, Mr Tandon said the UPA Government, under the pressure from the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, was on the path of replicating what late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did by clamping emergency. He cautioned that the former Prime Minister had to bear the public wrath in the elections following the emergency and the public would give similar treatment to the Congress in the days to come.

Mr Tandon also flayed Bihar Governor Buta Singh for lowering the dignity of the august office by taking the ``anti-people'' decision in collusion with RJD chief and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.

Rigging feared

The BJP has apprehended rigging and violence by the ruling party in the June 2 by-polls for the four Assembly seats of the State.

A delegation of State BJP leaders, headed by Mr. Dixit, met the State Chief Electoral Officer, Vijay Sharma, and alleged that like the last Lok Sabha polls, the Samajwadi Party-led Government was misusing the State machinery in support of party candidates.

The delegation also submitted a memorandum to Mr Sharma accusing the district administration of working in a partisan manner in the seats where by-polls were scheduled.

Quoting the instance of Varanasi, where the official vehicles of both Mayor and Deputy Mayor (both from BJP) have been withdrawn by the administration, the party questioned why the official car of the Allahabad Mayor (from SP) had not been taken back.

The party also charged the SP candidate from Allahabad (West) constituency Mohd Ashraf with ``terrorising the electorate for votes'' and asked the Election Commission to take timely corrective action in this regard. UNI
