100 loads of river

sand seized

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Over 100 loads of river sand were seized by the newly set up special squad headed by a tahsildar from near Netaji Road at Thrikkannapuram on the city suburbs on Tuesday. As many as 70 loads of sand were seized from the first bank and the remaining from the second bank. According to the Revenue Divisional Officer, M. Sasi Kumar, those behind the illegal mining of sand escaped with the vehicles when the special squad reached the spot on getting a tip-off. The authorities have decided to dump the seized sand in River Thrikkannapuram as auction of the sand is not feasible. The squad comprising five police personnel from the Armed Reserve Camp had been set up exclusively to deal with illegal mining of river sand. The district-level squad would be concentrating on Thrikkannapuram, Nemom, Neyyattinkara and Perumbazhuthoor initially. — Staff Reporter

Assist sea surge-hit

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI Parliamentary Party leader in the Lok Sabha, P.K. Vasudevan Nair, has urged the Prime Minister to provide urgent relief to the people of Kerala who have been affected by the sea surge of the last few days. In a letter to the Prime Minister, released for publication here on Tuesday, Mr. Vasudevan Nair pointed out that the sea surge had caused extensive damage on the Kerala coast. Hundreds of houses were uprooted by the violent waves and people in the coastal hamlets were living in fear. They must be supported with free ration and financial assistance, the CPI leader said. — Special Correspondent

BJP protest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BJP on Tuesday organised demonstrations at various district centres in the State to protest against the dissolution of the Bihar Assembly. The BJP State president, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, said that there was no justification for the dissolution of the House instead of inviting the National Democratic Alliance leader who had obtained the support of the majority of the members in the Assembly to form the Government. He called for more protests at the local level on Wednesday.

Aircraft grounded

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Boeing 737-800 aircraft of Air-India Express, that came from Abu Dhabi - Muscat tonight, had been grounded at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport due to a snag in one of the tyres.

Air-India sources said that the snag was detected after the aircraft landed at the airport. The aircraft was grounded as Jet Airways, which handles the maintenance of Air-India Express aircraft at Thiruvananthapuram, did not have a spare tyre. SBT's tsunami donation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Bank of Travancore made a fresh donation of Rs.51 lakhs on Tuesday to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the victims of the tsunami that devastated the coastal areas of peninsular India in December last year. The bank had donated Rs.35 lakhs to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and Rs.50 lakhs to the Kerala Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund earlier for the tsunami relief measures. The cheque covering the fresh donation was handed over to the Governor, R. L. Bhatia, by the managing director of the bank, Om Bhat, at the Raj Bhavan. — Special Correspondent
