Control room to deal with disasters

Police, authorities concerned put on alert


  • Officials told to take up rain-related works on priority
  • People may dial 1033 for help
  • Taluk-level task forces set up to coordinate relief works
  • BSNL, MESCOM told to set up facilities to deal with eventualities

    MANGALORE: With monsoon round the corner, the district administration has geared up to deal with any eventualities. Apart from directing various agencies to make preparations to deal with any emergencies, it has decided to set up a 24-hour control room in the Deputy Commissioner's office to deal with rain-related calamities.

    The Deputy Commissioner, Arvind Shrivastava, who presided over a meeting in this regard on Monday, instructed officials to attend to rain-related works on priority.

    Besides directing the heads of departments not to leave the district headquarters during the period, he stressed the need to coordinate efforts to rush relief to people in distress.

    Referring to the control room, Mr. Shrivastava said it will start functioning from the first week of June. People can dial 1033 and seek help, he added. Besides, taluk-level task forces with representation from all quarters will be set up.

    Sea erosion

    Noting that sea erosion is likely to be a major problem once the monsoon advances into the coastal parts of the State, the Deputy Commissioner directed the police, home guards and fire services to be in a state of preparedness to rescue people residing by the sea.

    In addition, teams will be set up to clear road blocks caused by landslides and inundation of low-lying areas, he said. ]

    They will assist the local civic authorities in relief works. Mr. Shrivastava directed the authorities of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Mangalore Electricity Supply Company to set up facilities to deal with any eventualities. Besides, he also directed the Mangalore City Corporation and other authorities concerned to ensure that drains are dredged. Revenue officials, including tahsildars and assistant commissioners, were asked to immediately pay compensation to people in the eventuality of loss of life or property.
