CHENNAI: The State secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), N. Varadarajan, led a demonstration at Otteri here on Tuesday as part of a Statewide protest demanding steps to hold successful elections for the Dalit panchayats of Pappapatti, Keeripatti and Nattarmangalam in Madurai district and Kottakatchiyendal in Virudhunagar district.

Mr. Varadarajan said in a statement here that the demonstrations were held at 500 places to highlight demands such as measures to ensure proper functioning of the elected bodies at the panchayats without succumbing to pressure from "oppressive forces".

The failure to conduct successful elections in the village panchayats in the last nine years brought disrepute to the State, he said. The rotation system for de-reservation should not be applicable to these panchayats. He also urged the Government to suspend the implementation of welfare schemes in the panchayats. Similar demonstrations were led by Central Committee members T. K. Rengarajan and A. K. Padmanabhan at Cuddalore and Pallavaram.
