Integration camp

CHENNAI: NCC is conducting an all-India National Integration camp-2005 at Quaid-E-Millath College and Madrasa-I-Azam Higher Secondary School till May 27. Over 600 cadets are participating.

Award

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has awarded B++ to Dhanraj Baid Jain College at Toraipakkam on May 20. The NAAC team visited the college on April 8 and 9.

Competition

Madras Institute of Fashion Technology will conduct the prize distribution for an inter-school drawing competition at CIPET, 100 Feet Road, Guindy on May 28. Amirtha Saravanan of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School won the first prize consisting Rs. 5,000.

fake certificates

A 30-year-old man, R. Umamahesh, was arrested on Monday by the Central Crime branch following a complaint by the United States embassy on charges of trying to get a visa with fake university certificates. Umamesh has a B. Sc. degree in mathematics and he had prepared a master's degree in the same subject from Andhra University. When he tried to obtain a visa to go to the U.S., the embassy officials suspecting foul play made an enquiry. He has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is on.

`Biscuit bandit'

strikes in train

Five members of a family, including an elderly woman, fell victim to a "biscuit bandit" who took away Rs. 6,000 in cash and some jewellery.

The victims, who were travelling by Mumbai Mail, arrived at Central Railway Station on Tuesday.

Police said Chandrakesavan (61) of K.V. Kuppam, Katpadi, boarded an unreserved compartment in Mumbai with his family members — Varalakshmi (50), Kannamma (75), Sri Devi (33) and Hema (12). Soon after the train left the Cuddapah railway station, a stranger picked up a conversation with Chandrakesavan and offered fruit juice in tetra packs to him and his family members.

After drinking the juice the five fell unconscious and the stranger allegedly took the cash, two rings and a chain. The family was admitted to the Government General hospital.

A case was registered by the Government Railway Police at the Central railway station. It was later transferred to the Government Railway Police at Cuddappah Railway Station.

Facility for women

As only men are making more use of the renovated Marina Swimming Pool, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced that from June 2, the pool will be open only to women between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.The pool was renovated at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs and inaugurated by the Chief Minister in October last year.
