CHENNAI: Renovation work at the Fort Museum (at the Fort St. George) will be completed by November, says T. Satyamurthy, Superintending Archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India. He said the renovation was to have been completed by May 18 but had been delayed due to problems with human resource and the difficulties of working within the limited space of the building, which was very old. The renovated museum might be declared open during the World Heritage Week.
Mini-auditorium
The renovation was undertaken with the aim of making the museum an educational centre that would appeal to children and young people and also attract tourists. A mini-auditorium equipped with a liquid crystal display was proposed along with touch-screens containing pages on history and heritage buildings of Chennai. Interactive sessions on art, architecture and history would be conducted for children. It had also been proposed to integrate the history of the Indian Freedom Struggle and the Indian perspective on British rule in these sessions. Children would thus be able to get a first hand account of history from freedom fighters and other experts. Gathering the required material for this was another reason for the delay, said Dr. Satyamurthy. The museum would also be disabled-friendly, with installation of lifts for senior citizens and the disabled. New showcases had been put at lower levels for easier viewing.
