HYDERABAD: Works on the crucial second phase of the Krishna drinking water supply project were set in motion with authorities of the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) finalising a series of tenders on various components of the project on Tuesday. Works were sanctioned for construction of clear water reservoirs at Kodandapur, Nasarlapally, Godakondla, Gunagal and Sahebnagar and three pump houses at Kodandapur, Nasarlapally and Godakondla. Contracts were also given away for three pumping stations, including pumping equipment with electric sub-stations and allied works. "Tenders for a water treatment plant at Kodandapur and the all-important pipeline from there to Sahebnagar on the city outskirts will be called for next week," the Director, Projects, HMWSSB, D. Ramakrishna, said.
Pipeline alignment
The 116-km pipeline would be laid along the Nagarajunasagar State highway on the left side of the road unlike the existing pipeline, which came up on the right side. "We have requested Roads and Buildings authorities to allocate four metres of grid space next to the stretch and hopefully we will get the permission," he said. The board was planning to procure MS pipelines from the Steel Authority of India, as was the case in the first phase. The design too was undergoing some changes and the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was whetting it. "We plan to increase the diameter of the pipe from 2,200 mm to 2,500 mm to reduce velocity of water, increase pumping efficiency and reduce power consumption. Similarly, the diameter of the butterfly valves will also be increased from 18,000 mm to 2,000 mm to reduce stress on the pipeline."
Changes in design
The new design will be finalised next week, and laying of pipelines should begin by June-end and completed by June 1, 2006, he said. The second phase to bring in an additional 90 MGD of water was crucial to the water supply system of the twin cities as Singur, the major source, was on the verge of drying up. It had only 2.4 TMC as against the full capacity of 30 TMC, which would last for only the next two months. "A bad monsoon and Singur going dry will only spell disaster and 60 per cent of the city will have to go without supplies." Towards that end, laying of a Rs. 100-crore pipeline from Sahebnagar to Lingampally on the outskirts of the city to divert Krishna water to areas dependent on Singur was also on. "All works have been awarded and pipe manufacturing is in progress. Works will begin next month. Given the alarming situation of Singur, we are requesting contractors to complete it by August 31 against the original time of six months by working during nights too."
