BANGALORE: At least five persons, including two policemen, were injured and three houses were damaged in violence that broke out at Jeevanahalli in Fraser Town police station limits on Tuesday evening. The police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse two groups that hurled stones and bottles at each other. The violence was triggered following a clash between Dalits and another group of Hindus, the police said.
Trouble after fair
After the local fair, "Oorahabba," on Monday, goats were sacrificed to the local deity on Tuesday evening. Around 6.30 p.m., a few youths belonging to a particular caste danced in front of the houses of the people of the other caste. Irritated by the dancing, people belonging to the other caste hurled soda bottles at the youths. On learning about the incident, the police rushed to the spot and dispersed the two groups. Around 9 p.m. a group of 50 youths took to stone throwing. Five people, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Fraser Town), Victor S. D'Souza, and a Karnataka State Reserve Police constable, were injured. Three houses were damaged. As the situation went out of control, the police resorted to lathi-charge and dispersed the mob. Security has been tightened in the area, and normality has returned.
