MYSORE: Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has proposed a drinking water scheme from the Kabini to provide 81.72 million litres daily (MLD) drinking water for southwestern parts of the city. The proposed drinking water project from the Kabini will be the first drinking water scheme for the city from a source other than the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir. The MUDA Commissioner, Pankaj Kumar Pandey, told The Hindu that the authority set aside Rs. 6 crores for the Rs. 55-crore Kabini drinking water scheme in its budget for this year. "MUDA will only partly finance it. The State Government will bear the remaining cost," he said. Survey for the project has begun. MUDA has deposited Rs. 10 lakhs for the purpose, he said. The Krishnaraja MLA, M.K. Somashekar, who recently inspected the survey work along with officials of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), said the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, has not only evinced keen interest in the project, but also assured him to release Rs. 48 crores. With vast tracts of agricultural land and Varuna canal creating a barrier for expansion on the north-eastern side of the city, MUDA has taken up development of new layouts on south-western side. If the average per-decade increase of population in this zone is taken into account, the population will reach 6.09 lakh by 2026 out of the city's projected population of 17 lakh. Under the first phase of the Kabini drinking water project, it has been proposed to supply 54.58 MLD of water. By the time the second phase is implemented, 81.72 MLD water will be supplied to the city from the project. The Kabini project envisages location of headwork at Bidaragudu and the raw water will be pumped into the water treatment plant proposed at Kellahalli junction, situated at a distance of 9.82 km. from the headwork. In the first phase, raw water from the headwork will be pumped through a deep well turbine pump set. At Kellahalli junction, the raw water will be treated through conventional method of aeration, flocculation, clarification, filtration and disinfection. The treated water will be collected through gravity at an intermediate big storage reservoir at the pump-house at Srirampura near Kote Hundi gate, which is about 5.8 km. from the water treatment plant. From the storage reservoir, the treated water will be pumped to an elevated storage reservoir at Dattagalli III stage, which is at a distance of 5.6 km, Vijaynagar IV Stage II phase, which is at a distance of 8.8 km., and Koppalur, which is at a distance of 2.5 km.
