Two killed in

road accidents

Thiruvananthapuram: One person was killed and another injured when the motorbike on which they were travelling was hit by a tipper lorry at Jawahar junction near Ayoor. The deceased was identified as John (45), a resident of Peringalloor, Ayoor. Sunny (38) of Ayoor has been admitted to the Medical College Hospital with injuries. In another accident, Radhakrishnan Nair (51) was killed when the motorbike on which he was riding was hit by a bus belonging to the Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation near Nemom High School on Tuesday evening. He was a resident of Peringammala, Kalliyoor. The body has been kept in the mortuary of Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Graft: former store

manager sentenced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vigilance Special Court in Thrissur has sentenced K.S. Nazeer, former shop manager of the Maveli Store at Fort Kochi in Ernakulam, to one year's rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh for fund embezzlement. In default of payment of the fine, Nazeer would have to serve three months' simple imprisonment. The case had been charge-sheeted by the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau, Ernakulam unit, in 1998. — Special Correspondent

SBI employees' protest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Employees of State Bank of India (SBI) on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the local head office of the bank here in protest against the management's new transfer policy.The demonstration was carried out under the banner of the State Banks' Staff Union. In a statement, the union said the employees were contemplating strong mode of agitation, including a strike, to counter the `unjust' transfers. — Special Correspondent

Youth arrested

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police today arrested a 24-year-old youth on the charge of cheating a foreign national who runs a charitable society for the care of street dogs at Kovalam. The police identified the accused as Murukesh Raveendran of Thazhathu Veedu, Kannanmoola. An official said he was arrested on the charge of embezzling a considerable amount of money from the charitable society run by Debra Yeoman of New Zealand. He was produced before a court. — Staff Reporter
