Talks held on upgrading CUSAT into IIT

  • Discussions on changing status of university to national entity
  • Teacher-student ratio proposed at 1:10
  • No ban on recruitment/creation of new posts
  • Project report to be submitted to Ministry of Human Resource Development

KOCHI: The State Cabinet will soon take a final decision on acquisition of 300 acres of land for upgrading the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) into an IIT. This was decided on the basis of talks held between the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, and the Vice-Chancellor of the university, P.K. Abdul Azis, in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

Dr. Azis said the Minister for Education, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, had assured all support for upgrading CUSAT into an IIT.

The Government will also discuss the issue of changing the status of the university from a State entity to a national entity. This needs to be backed by the State Government. The Government is likely to issue a consent letter in this regard.

The Education Minister has agreed to give necessary administrative sanction for achieving a teacher-student ration of 1:10. According to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Government should also agree that there should be no ban on recruitment/creation of new positions needed to achieve the teacher-student ratio of 1:10 in the university.

Based on the Government decisions, the university authorities will prepare a detailed project report and submit it to the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The report will carry details of the action proposed by the university to fulfil the requirement for being upgraded to the level of an IIT.
