Ruling Left Front wins 48 West Bengal municipalities

Special Correspondent

Congress comes second with victories in 10 bodies

KOLKATA: The Left Front consolidated its strength in West Bengal, bagging 48 of the 79 civic bodies, elections for which were held on Sunday. In the process, it increased its tally by seven municipalities.

Despite its tally going down, the Congress is set to form boards in 10 municipalities. The Trinamool Congress could win in only three municipalities, even though it won in 10 civic bodies in alliance with the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Six municipalities witnessed a tie.

The Left Front recorded significant gains at the Trinamool's expense in the industrial belt of North 24 Parganas district and West Midnapore.

After a decade, it also wrested control of the Old Malda municipality, considered a Congress citadel. The result comes as a setback to veteran Congress leader A.B.A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Anil Biswas congratulated the people for voting back the Left Front in most municipalities. He said the results were as expected.

The Left Front had made substantial gains, senior Trinamool leader Pankaj Banerjee conceded but denied that the recent desertions had any impact on his party's performance.

He claimed that the Left Front would not have been as successful in districts such as North 24 Parganas had the "elections been free and fair." His charge was dismissed by the CPI(M) leadership.

The Gorkha National Liberation Front's triumph in the Mirik municipality in the Darjeeling hills is significant in view of the elections to the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, slated for September.
