BANDA (UTTAR PRADESH): A 70-year-old woman allegedly ended her life by jumping into the funeral pyre of her husband at Bahundari village, 60 kms from here. The incident came to light when hundreds of people thronged the site of the funeral to offer flowers, coconut and incense sticks as part of "Sati Puja," police said. Superintendent of Police Zaki Ahmed told PTI that the incident was being investigated, particularly whether the woman jumped into the funeral pyre on her own or was prodded into doing so. Quoting villagers, the police said that the woman's husband, Jogeshwar Tewari, had been ailing for some time and died on May 7 last. As Tiwari's pyre was lit, his wife Ramkumari jumped into it.
