BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Babulal Gaur, has asked the Government of India to increase Central assistance for improving the network of roads in the State. Mr. Gaur made this demand while addressing the 18th meeting of the Central Zonal Council in the State Capital on Wednesday. The Chief Minister said that the amount received by Madhya Pradesh from the Central Roads Fund was inadequate. He said that the amount of Rs. 80 crore sanctioned for Madhya Pradesh as Plan expenditure for National Highways be increased to Rs. 120 crore and Rs.40 crore approved for national highways under the non-Plan head should be raised to Rs.80 crore. He also urged the Centre to approve without any delay the State Government's proposal for 1590 kilometers of roads under the Pradhan Mantri Bharat Jodo Pariyojana. This ambitious Rs. 40,000 crore project would be connecting State capitals and other important cities and tourist destinations with national Highways. Mr. Gaur said that Madhya Pradesh should get a better deal from the Centre when it comes to surface transport and railways. He also submitted a detailed memorandum to the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, who chaired the Central Zonal Council meeting, detailing States' requirements and suggestions regarding many pending inter-state issues. The note included the request for four-laning of Gwalior-Indore and Jabalpur-Rewa-Allahabad National Highways.
