MUMBAI: Fickle second innings batting by Vijay Merchant XI and Khandu Rangnekar XI put the teams in an awkward position in third round second day of The Sportstar Trophy 2005 MCA Under-19 Selection Trial tournament at Cross Maidan. In a low-scoring match at Karnataka CC, Khandu Rangnekar XI, chasing a target of 180 to win was 31-1 at stumps against Merchant XI. Resuming at 57-3, Rangnekar conceded a lead of 42 after getting bowled out for 127, with medium-pacer Anand Singh (3-6), off-spinner Sachin Wagh (3-19) and left-arm spinner Sagar Udeshi (3-34) shared the spoils. Merchant XI was dismissed for 137 in the second essay, with off-spinner Oninder Singh Gill taking five for 35. Murtuza Hussain grabbed six wickets at the cost of 66 runs from 16 overs to help Dattu Phadkar XI ease into the front with a 65-runs lead over Vijay Manjrekar XI at National CC. Phadkar XI made 198 in the second knock, helped by 55 off 91 (two sixes, seven fours) by opener Muddassar Sheikh. Off-spinner Sanket Chavan took 3-51. Manjrekar XI had not opened the account in the second innings, chasing 284 for win on third and final day. The scores: Karnataka CC ground: Vijay Merchant XI 169 & 137 (Aditya Mehta 40, Oninder Singh Gill five for 35, Salman Ahmed) vs Khandu Rangnekar XI 127 (Pratik Amin 34; Anand Singh three for 6, Sachin Wagh three for 19, Sagar Udeshi three for 34) and 31 for one. National CC ground: Dattu Phadkar XI 252 & 198 (Muddassar Sheikh 55, Siddharth Chitnis 38, Tejas Nerulkar 27, Dhaval Parab 25 (Sanket Chavan three 51) vs Vijay Manjrekar XI 187 (Gaurang Shah 34, Swapnil Kulye 28, Murtuza Hussain six for 66) and zero for no loss.
