Sheila performs `bhoomi pujan'

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, on Wednesday performed "bhoomi pujan" for construction of 32 staff quarters for New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) employees at Valmiki Sadan on Mandir Marg. The Rs.1.52-crore project will be completed within a year.

Ms. Dikshit also flagged off a refuse collector acquired recently by the civic body.

`Overhaul Sangeet Natak Akademi'

NEW DELHI: Eminent musicologist N. P. Seshadri has urged the Union Government to undertake a thorough overhaul of Sangeet Natak Akademi "which has not been functioning for the purpose for which it was established".

Dr. Seshadri, who was present when the Akademi was born in 1954, said that over the years distinguished persons had presided over the Akademi. In the present circumstances, a retired judge of the Supreme Court or a High Court should be appointed the Chairman, he suggested.

NCC chief meets

Air Marshal

NEW DELHI: The Director-General of National Cadet Corps (NCC), Lt. General M.C. Bhandari, met the Vice-Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal S.K. Malik, on Wednesday and apprised him of the air activities of the cadets.

Gen. Bhandari also briefed Air Marshal Malik on the other activities being undertaken by NCC including institutional training, community development, youth exchange programme and adventure activities.

`Budget hotels

will be encouraged'

NEW DELHI: The Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, B.L.Joshi, said on Wednesday that construction of budget hotels should be encouraged to provide affordable accommodation to foreign and domestic travellers.

At a meeting with officials of the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), Mr. Joshi said that due to multiplicity of authority facilitation of tourists and passengers at airports had become a matter of concern.

Probe ordered

into drowning

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Jal Board has ordered an inquiry into the drowning of two of its employees at Giri Nagar in South Delhi on Tuesday. A junior engineer (civil), D.C. Pant, and beldar, Hari Kishan, lost their lives while performing duty. The DJB has advised all its employees to carry the required safety equipments while clearing blocked sewers.

Alleged touts arrested

NEW DELHI: The task force set up by Northern Railway to deal with unauthorised commission agents at railway stations arrested 64 alleged touts in the first quarter of the current year. Of these, 13 have been convicted and nine sent to jail.
