CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Governor and Administrator of Union Territory of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, his Haryana counterpart, A.R.Kidwai and the Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, have condoled the death of versatile actor and Union Sports Minister, Sunil Dutt, in separate messages issued here on Wednesday. Describing Mr. Dutt as a Bollywood stalwart, distinguished Parliamentarian and a nationalist to the core, General Rodrigues said that his contribution to different facets of national life would always be remembered. Dr. Kidwai said that the sudden death of Mr.Dutt was a big loss to the country and especially to the people of Haryana as he belonged to Yamunanagar. "He came to prominence in politics due to his impeccable reputation for honesty and integrity as well as his deep commitment to the common man. It is a testimony of the deep love and affection that he commanded from people that he was elected as a member of Parliament from Mumbai for a record number of five times,'' Dr.Kidwai added. In a condolence message issued here, Mr. Hooda described him as a seasoned Parliamentarian and a man of acumen and farsightedness. Describing the cine star as a "son of Haryana'', Mr.Hooda said that he had lost a personal friend. Mr. Dutt was also a well- known social activist who undertook padyatras to promote communal harmony in the country. Popularly known as Dutt Sahib, he belonged to Mandoli village in Yamunanagar district. Mr Hooda also conveyed his condolences to the members of the bereaved family. The former Haryana Chief Minister and President of the Haryana unit of the Congress, Bhajan Lal, also condoled the death of Sunil Dutt and said that the void would be difficult to be filled. The former Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal supremo, Om Parkash Chautala, said in a message that with his death the political and social life of the country had been impoverished. Significantly, only about six months ago, as the Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr. Chautala had bestowed the `Haryana Gaurav' award on Sunil Dutt and his son, Sanjay Dutt, at Kurukshetra for the services rendered by them to Haryana.
