SRINAGAR: Much to the embarrassment of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, members of his coalition partners, the Congress and PDF, have echoed the Governor, Lt Gen (retd) S. K. Sinha's views on the security situation in respect of holding panchayat elections. The Governor has returned the Panchayati Raj Bill 2005 to the Assembly for a review. The opposition National Conference has also welcomed the decision. Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma told The Hindu that he had not yet gone through the queries raised by the Governor. "But I was told he had raised the issue of security of panchayat members, especially those in remote areas. The cabinet will meet and discuss the issue," he said. However, the Minister of State for Works and Congress leader, G. A. Mir, was quoted by a news agency as saying, "It is the right decision by the Governor, who has raised certain queries on the Panchayati Raj Bill concerning the security of candidates. We welcome it." The Revenue Minister and leader of the People's Democratic Forum (a partner in the coalition Government), Hakeem Mohammad Yasin, too hailed the decision.
