State Crime Records Bureau office gets new building

PG courses in international law launched; modern complex for management institute

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa declared open the Rs. 2.15-crore office building for the State Crime Records Bureau here on Wednesday.

The 20,147-sq.ft, two-storey building, located on Greenways Road, Raja Annamalaipuram, will house the Tamil Nadu Fingerprint Bureau and the Crime and Criminal Information system.

The bureau is the largest in the country and has 210 experts and staff on its rolls.

Fingerprint identifications

Police officials explained that the State stood first in the country in the identification of criminals using their fingerprints. Last year, of the 3,000 criminals identified in the country using their fingerprints, Tamil Nadu accounted for 1,600 identifications, said Sivanandi, SP, SSB. More than 50 per cent of the property theft cases are detected through fingerprint identification in the State.

The Director-General of Police, A.X. Alexander, explained to the Chief Minister the salient features of the facility. State Ministers, Chief Secretary N. Narayanan, Home Secretary Pawan Raina and other senior police officials were among those present at the inauguration.

The Chief Minister also declared open a new building for the School of Excellence in Law, constructed at Rs. 1.30 crores at the Tamil Nadu Ambedkar Law University complex.

She also inaugurated post-graduate degree courses in International Law and Intellectual Property Rights from the current academic year. Twenty candidates will be admitted in each course. On the occasion, the Chief Minister laid foundation stones for new buildings to house the PG, research and administrative departments of the University, the Law College at Chengalpattu, additional class rooms, hostel, library and play grounds in the government law colleges at Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, and Tirunelveli, released 27 law books in Tamil, translated version of 81 Central and State Acts and distributed prizes and certificates to students.

Minister for Law and Information Technology, D. Jayakumar, Law Secretary L. Jayasankaran and Vice-Chancellor of the Dr. Ambedkar Law University S.S.P. Darwesh participated.

Modern complex opened

A modern complex for the Anna Institute of Management, constructed at a cost of Rs. 10 crores, was later declared open by Ms. Jayalalithaa.

The new complex has an air-conditioned auditorium, computer labs, AC library, new hostel block and an indoor games building.

The Chief Minister named the new complex "Magizhambu" and the auditorium "Ponnarangam." Chief Secretary N. Narayanan, Director of the Institute M.B.Pranesh and Personnel and Administrative Reforms Secretary K. Arulmozhi were among those who participated in the function.

It was a series of three functions, one after another, with no speeches.

Officials explained to the Chief Minister the salient features of each project.
