KANNUR: The Kerala Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, said on Thursday that the UDF Government was facing the electorate in the byelections in the Koothuparamba and Azhikode constituencies with a conviction that it had carried out its development agenda over the past four years. Mr. Chandy was addressing election meetings at Mattul, Cherukunnu and Valapattanam in the Azhikode constituency in the evening. He said that those who aspired for the development of the State should cast their votes in favour of the UDF candidates. Referring to the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan's statement that the byelection results would amount to people's evaluation of the UDF Government, Mr. Chandy said that public assessment of the Government's performance was only one of the many factors that would influence the byelections. Mr. Chandy said that the State Government was not on the defensive while facing the electorate in the byelections. The UDF Government had carried out the development agenda despite roadblocks created by Mr. Achuthanandan and the CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan. The CPI(M) had continuously unleashed political controversies and agitation over the last four years, Mr. Chandy said. "The UDF Government cannot be intimidated by these controversies and roadblocks," Mr. Chandy said. The LDF that had predicted disintegration of the UDF now found itself in a difficult situation. The LDF's failure to field a candidate for the Rajya Sabha election had exposed the rift in the CPI(M) and the LDF. The LDF had failed to convene a meeting to discuss the Rajya Sabha candidate issue, he said. The Chief Minister said that the allegations of corruption raised against the Smart City project before the MoU was signed was to intimidate the Dubai Internet City which had agreed to start the project in Kochi though Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were ready to offer more facilities for the project. "Achuthanandan is an enemy of development of the State," Mr. Chandy said adding that the former cared least about the distress of thousands of jobless people in the State.
