dated May 27, 1955: Britain goes to the polls

A flurry of early workers voted as soon as the booths opened on May 26 in Britain's fourth general election since the war. In gloomy thundery weather, thousands on their way to jobs recorded their choice of Government for the critical five years ahead. For the first time over a century all electors have an opportunity to vote. Not since 1832 has there been a general election in which no candidate was returned unopposed.
