dated May 27, 1955: Congress wins by-election

Mrs. Leela Mannadiar (Congress) has been elected to the Travancore-Cochin Assembly from Trichur, defeating her Communist rival, Mr. C. Achutha Menon, by over 3,000 votes. The by-election was caused by the death of the Congress member, Dr. P.P. Anthony. Mrs. Mannadiar is the second woman member of the Assembly and the first in the Congress. The other woman member, Miss K.R. Gouri, belongs to the Communist group. Mr. Achutha Menon is the General Secretary of the State Communist Party.
