ERODE: Though there is no water scarcity in Erode district, officials should not be lethargic and must take precautionary steps to combat drought in future, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister, P.C. Ramasamy, said. Reviewing the developmental works undertaken in the district, the Minister said that officials should educate the public on the economic use of water. He wanted the officials to periodically inspect the ration shops and ascertain whether all commodities were supplied properly to card holders. Steps were taken to bifurcate the big ration shops and form part-time ration shops. He urged the Collector to give permission for such part-time ration shops wherever it was necessary. The Minister urged the Government officials to complete works in time. He raised queries with the Collector on the construction of houses for the poor under the Indira Housing Scheme. Presiding over the review meeting, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said that under the Prime Minister's Gramin Yojana, 1,700 group houses would be built in the district this year. He said under the Katcha Housing scheme, 883 houses would be built this year. Further, the group houses built in 1970s and 1980s would be surveyed and an estimate would be prepared for effecting repairs. He said necessary repairs would be taken up with Government fund. The Minister reviewed the performance of Rural Development Agency, Social Welfare and other departments. The Rajya Sabha Member N.R. Govindarajar, MLAs K.S. Thennarasu, K.S. Palanisamy, K.C. Karupannan, S.S. Ramanidharan, P.
