Nauseating: Effluent and sewage choke Kalingarayan Canal. Photo: M. Govarthan
ERODE: Contaminated water is stagnating in Kalingarayan Canal much to the hardship of farmers. After releasing water for two wet crops, supply into the Kalingarayan Canal was stopped in April. It is expected that the water would be released for wet crop in June. Now the Public Works Department is effecting annual repairs. The Kalingarayan farmers said that hundreds of textile dyeing industries and a few tanneries situated near the canal were discharging effluents into the canal. Further, sewage from the Periya Agraharam and Erode municipal areas was being let into the canal. As there was no flow in the canal at present, the contaminated water had percolated the agricultural wells nearby.
Appeal to Collector
The farmers appealed to the Collector to shift all dyeing units and tanneries to the Perundurai Industrial Growth Centre run by the SIPCOT. They also urged the Collector to direct the Pollution Control Board to take stringent action against those discharging the untreated wastes into the canal. They also wanted the Collector to find an alternative method to dispose of sewage from the municipal areas. Officials said that at least one tmc feet of water was required to flush out the contaminated water in the canal.
