Forest Ministry to codify problems of tiger reserves

Staff Correspondent

States seek more funds and powers to tackle problems

NEW DELHI: The Environment and Forests Ministry has decided to codify the problems of tiger reserves in the country. The State-specific issues would then be discussed with the Prime Minister for redressal.

This decision was taken at a meeting of the Chief Wildlife Wardens and Directors of Tiger Reserves here on Thursday. Most of the States sought more funds and powers to deal with the problems.

After daylong deliberations, also attended by two Members of Parliament from the "Tiger and Wilderness Watch'' and three members of the Tiger Task Force, it was concluded that the problem in Sariska was neither identical nor universal to other tiger reserves, the Environment and Forest Minister, A.Raja told reporters.

While the new country-level census figures of tigers would be available after February 2006, the opinion of some individuals based on anecdotal evidence should not lead to a conclusion that the tiger population is declining in the country as a whole, he said.
