Seminars to be held against untouchability

Staff Reporter

PERAMBALUR: Cultural programmes and seminars on eradication of untouchability will be held in the district for creating awareness among the masses, said the Collector, D.Vivekanandan.

Presiding over an official meeting of the `Awareness and Vigilance Committee for Eradication of Untouchability' here on Tuesday, the Collector said that cultural programmes would be organised in a number of villages, while ten villages have been identified, one in each block, for conducting the seminar.

The Collector said no complaint on caste-based discrimination like `twin-glass' system, had been received from any part of the district in the recent past.

In the last two years, cash relief to the tune of Rs.14.43 lakhs had been disbursed to 120 persons who were affected by various caste-based atrocities inflicted to them, he said.

The Superintendent of Police, P. Parasuraman, was among those who participated.
