PONDICHERRY: The AIADMK has urged the Lt Governor, M.M. Lakhera, to intervene immediately and ensure that the development of Karaikal was geared up as all along nothing had been done to the progress of the region. In a memorandum submitted to the Lt Governor on Wednesday, the secretary of the Pondicherry State committee of the party, A. Anbalagan, MLA and the Secretary of the party's Karaikal District Unit, S.Selvaganapathy, drew the attention of the Administration to the pitiable plight of the youth of Karaikal remaining unemployed for years together because of `piecemeal approach' on the part of the Administration in offering jobs. The erstwhile DMK Government in Pondicherry had in a hurry laid foundation of a fishing harbour in Karaikal. The present government had also not done anything to construct the harbour. Hence the Lt Governor should expedite the project so that fishermen of the region would be relieved of the agony of taking shelter for their crafts in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The Arasalar bridge in Karaikal linked with neighbouring Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu had been damaged by the tsunami last year. Instead of speedily restoring the soundness of the bridge the government was moving on a slow pace hindering flow of traffic on this vital segment.
