VISAKHAPATNAM: Following a fresh bout of trouble, the Chittivalasa Jute Mills, run by Kolkata-based management, has declared a lockout. The trouble was triggered by the management's unilateral decision to slash the daily wages of the badli workers from Rs. 160 to Rs. 85. The company issued a circular announcing reduction of wages for the badli workers on May 4 and when the workers opposed the decision, the management declared a lockout with an intention of avoiding payment of wages to some 5,000 permanent, badli and special badli workers on flimsy grounds, the CITU State president, Ch. Narsinga Rao, told The Hindu on Thursday. He said that after the union approached the Commissioner of Labour, the Deputy Commissioner of Labour convened two meetings to find out an amicable solution. As per a game plan, the management did not depute its representative, he alleged. Mr. Rao, who heads the Chittivalasa Jute Mills Mechanical Workers and Workers' Union, said that despite their demand, the management had not submitted the balance sheet to them.
