Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: A teak log fetched a world-record high price at the rate of Rs.1.13 lakhs a cubic metre at a recent auction conducted at the Central Depot, Aruvakkode, under the Timber Sales Division of Palakkad Circle.

In the May 19 auction, the log measuring 840 cm in length and 192 cm in girth and having a volume of 1.935 cubic metres fetched a price of Rs.2,66,759. This export-quality wood is mainly used for shipbuilding. Wood with girth more than 185 cm is qualified as export quality.

The total price of wood taken from the tree that yielded the log is Rs.4,23,798. The previous record for a tree is Rs.4,13,799. Thus, both log wise and tree wise, this is a record, said K. Mukundan, Divisional Forest Officer, Timber Sales Division, Palakkad.

Mr. Mukundan said in the auction, the TVS Group took 31 cubic metres at a price of Rs.1,00,400 a cubic metre for the reconstruction of Vadakkumnatha Temple, Thrissur. For the reconstruction of St. Thomas Orthodox Church at Karthikapalli, two logs of 3.252 cubic metres were bid for Rs.77,100 and Rs.66,100 per cubic metre.
