Collector discharged

from hospital

VILLUPURAM: The Villupuram Collector, Ka. Balachandran, who had an accidental fall into the sea off the Mudaliarkuppam coast on Wednesday, was discharged from the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital on Thursday morning.

The Deputy Director of Fisheries Department, Sheikh Jalaluddin; Swami Gurudasananda of the Mysore Citizens' Forum (the NGO that donated boats to the fishermen), and others who fell into sea were also discharged.

The Collector thanked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for enquiring about his health after the incident.

He also thanked the Ministers, MPs, MLAs, the fishermen community and the public for their support. — Special Correspondent

Chengalpattu range DIG office shifted to Kanchi

KANCHEEPURAM: The office of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Chengalpattu Range, has been shifted to Kancheepuram from St. Thomas Mount following the merger of Chengalpattu East Police District with Chennai City Police.

The new office is located at a building opposite the Special Investigation Team office (set up to probe Sankararaman murder case) on the DRO Camp Office Road. Though the DIG office started functioning at the new place from May 23, the landline number of the SIT office (04112— 239959) is being used for communication from and to the DIG office, official sources said. — Staff Reporter

Entrance exam: PMK plans protest

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi has planned to hold a demonstration in the first week of June to demand revocation of the entrance examination system for admitting students to professional courses.

S. Ramadoss, founder, said admission should be done on the basis of the performance of the students in the qualifying higher secondary examinations. Under the present system, the students of Government-run schools and local bodies were the worst affected as they were deprived of benefits being enjoyed by students in private schools.

The agitation will urge the Anna University not to release the rank list, slated for the middle of June, Dr. Ramadoss said. — Special Correspondent

Textiles workshop

from June 23

CHENNAI: A two-day comprehensive workshop on "export apparel fabrics selection and inspection methods" will be jointly organised by the Small Industries Service Institute and the Textiles Committee, Chennai, from June 23.

The programme's objective is to enable readymade garment units to compete in the international market after the post-quota regime.

It will cover all relevant aspects in areas including apparel fabric selection and specification, characteristic of fabric, importance of fabric selection and knitted fabric inspection.

32 child labourers rescued in Pollachi

POLLACHI: Labour department officials on Thursday rescued 32 child labourers from automobile workshops here.

They were rescued from 26 establishments and cases were filed against them under the Child Labour (Abolition and Rehabilitation) Act, 1986, says C. Thangavel, inspector.

In all, 106 cases were booked this month and over 150 child workers rescued from automobile, jewellery and brick industry in Coimbatore, Pollachi and Udumalpet. — Staff Reporter

Free medical camp

Thanajvur: A free medical camp will be organised jointly by the Annamalai Medical College of Chidambaram and District Rehabilitation Office here during the first week of June for the benefit of those affected with problems in spinal chord.

Those who want to undergo treatment should apply in a white paper to the District Rehabilitation Centre before May 30, according to a press release issued here by the Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni.

Those who got injury below C4 level up to D10 level in the spinal chord one-and-a-half year back would only be eligible to attend the camp. — Staff Reporter

B.Tech results

Thanjavur: Thirteen students of the first batch of B. Tech from Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) - Deemed University has passed out with honours, according to a press release. The results for the first batch of students, which were released by the Registrar of the University today, have been put up on the board in the campus and on the university website.

The press release said that 588 final year students out of 700 passed in all subjects with a pass percentage of 84 per cent. — Staff Reporter

Assault case filed against two girls

Tuticorin: The Kovilpatti West police have registered a case against two girls on the charge of assaulting Kavitha, 47, at Manthithoppu on Wednesday.

Police said Ganiammal, 19, and Lakshmi, 22, assaulted Kavitha due to previous enmity between them. — Staff Reporter

Three youths held

on assault charge

Tuticorin: The police arrested three persons for attacking a 47-year-old man at Thonukal near here on Wednesday.

According to sources, Chinnathai, 38, Sekar, 22, and Madasamy, 20, assaulted Pandi following a wordy duel over some trivial issue.

The Kovilpatti West police are investigating the case. — Staff Reporter

12 gamblers held

Tuticorin: The police arrested 12 gamblers from different places during raids conducted on Tuesday.

While Thomas (40) and six others were taken into the custody from Poosaripatti falling under Nalatinpudur police station limits, Vaiyanaperumal (34) and four others were arrested at Eral.

The accused were remanded to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

Cash stolen from

IMFL outlet

Tuticorin: The Central Crime Branch men are on the look out for some unidentified persons who allegedly stolen cash from an IMFL outlet run by TASMAC here on May 24.

Police said an investigation was launched into the incident based on a complaint lodged by the supervisor Murugesan that Rs.24,478 kept inside the shop was missing under suspicious circumstances. — Staff Reporter

Sevai Illam invites applications

Nagercoil: The Social Welfare Department has invited applications from eligible candidates in the district to get admission into `Sevai Illam' at Puliyurkurichi near Thuckalay.

In a release, the Collector, Sunil Paliwal, said that widows, destitutes, tsunami-affected women and unmarried girls in the age group of 14 to 35 years were eligible to send application forms.

Family income of an applicant should not exceed Rs.12,000 a year.

Those who get admission into the care centre would be provided free accommodation, education, food, notebooks and other vocational training. — Staff Reporter

Burglar held, stolen goods recovered

Tuticorin: The police today arrested a youth in connection with a burglary, which took place at Masilamanipuram here on May 24.

Police said Gani, 19, burgled the house of Venkatasubramanian and decamped with 26 silver cups, three siver plates, six silver vessels and eight silver spoons besides some other articles.

The entire stolen property was recovered, the police added. — Staff Reporter

Rain in Erode

ERODE: Erode and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rain on Wednesday night. Lightning struck five places in the district damaging coconut trees. Telephone lines were affected in Dharapuram. Kangeyam received 11.2 mm of rainfall, Erode 11 mm, Sathyamangalam and Perundurai 7 mm each, Gobichettipalayam 5 mm, Bhavani 2.4 mm and Dharapuram 2 mm. - Staff Reporter

Timber logs seized

ERODE: Ten tonnes of timber logs were seized from a lorry on the Gobi-Erode Main Road on Wednesday. The Gobichettipalayam Tahsildar, Smile, seized the logs during a vehicle check after officials found that there was no purchase bill or permit to carry them. A case has been registered against the lorry driver. - Staff Reporter
