BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (United) will contest the elections to zilla and taluk panchayats, scheduled next month, independently. The party is confident that it has penetrated the voter base at these levels to make a dent in both the Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress vote bank, the JD(U) secretary-general and MLC, M.P. Nadagouda, said here on Thursday. Dr. Nadagouda told presspersons that the party parliamentary board met recently and decided to venture into the panchayat elections without the support of, or understanding with, any other party. Basavaraj Bommai, general secretary, will head the committee to work out the details of campaigning, strategy and other issues, he said. On June 4, the State party leadership will meet candidates for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections and finalise plans, Dr. Nadagouda said. The JD(U) contested the gram panchayat elections independently, and it has done well enough to consider the same strategy for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections. As for the Chamarajpet Assembly byelection, where the JD(U) has fielded a candidate, the party would like to test the waters and see how it is received by the voters, apart from keeping up the morale of the rank and file that has been working hard in the run-up to the panchayat elections, he added.
