Centre releases funds for rural development

BANGALORE: The Centre has released Rs. 114 crores to the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Department of the State for implementing drinking water and rural development schemes. B.P. Baligar, Principal Secretary, RDPR, told The Hindu on Thursday that the Centre has released Rs. 87 crores for executing drinking water supply schemes in drought-prone districts and Rs. 27 crores under the Total Sanitation Programme. — Special Correspondent

One killed, five injured in clash

Raichur: One person was killed and five persons were injured in a clash between two groups over a land dispute at Adavihavi village of Lingsugur on Wednesday.

The police said there was a dispute between Bheemanna and Bassamma over a few acres of land in the village. Three years ago, a court issued an order in favour of Bassamma.

On Wednesday, Bheemanna, Uppanna, Durgesh, Durgamma, Bheemangouda and Hanumanthu attacked Amaresh, Manappa, Shekarappa, Hanumantha, Durgappa and Bassamma. Amaresh, Manappa and Durgappa were severely injured and two others received minor injuries. Manappa died on the way to hospital.

The Lingsugur police have registered two separate cases. — Staff Correspondent

SBI ties up with BPCL

BANGALORE: The State Bank of India had entered into an arrangement with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to exempt the bank cardholders from paying surcharge on purchase of fuel and lubricants. The facility, which can be used by those having ATM-cum-debit cards called "State Bank Cash Plus," was introduced here on Wednesday by the bank's Chief General Manager, Bangalore Circle, R. Sridharan, at Vinod Service Station, a retail outlet of BPCL here. The facility will be extended to retail outlets of BPCL in all parts of the country by May 30. SBI had also tied up with MasterCard International and Visa to enable cardholders of other banks to access the 5,300 State Bank ATMs at nominal charges. — Staff Reporter

`Medical colleges lack infrastructure'

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA for Shivajinagar, Katta Subramanya Naidu, has criticised the Government's decision to increase the intake of students in four government medical colleges without providing adequate teaching staff and infrastructure in the colleges.

The Government has decided to increase intake of students from 400 to 600 in the four medical colleges from the current academic year (2005-06).

In a press note here, Mr. Naidu charged the Government with misleading students on the availability of medical seats. — Special Correspondent

to vote in bypolls

BANGALORE: The president of the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha, B.N.V. Subramanya, has appealed to Brahmins to vote without fail in the June 2 byelections in the Shimoga Lok Sabha and Chamarajpet Assembly constituencies. — Staff Reporter

Venugopal Kasargod mourned

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat has mourned the death of Venugopal Kasargod, veteran Kannada activist, theatre artiste and playwright.

According to a condolence letter released to the press here on Thursday by the president of the unit, S. Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Venugopal Kasargod was a loyal fighter for Kannada.

The former president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat Harikrishna Punaroor and the Mangalore Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat president, M. Mohan Alva, have also mourned the death of Mr. Venugopal. — Staff Correspondent

Workshop to discuss problems in education

HASSAN: The Hassan district unit of the Students Federation of India will hold a seven-day workshop to discuss the problems in education in the changed economic situation from Friday here. The workshop will discuss the social, economical and political angles of the problem, he added. — Staff Correspondent

Heavy rain

in Bellary

BELLARY: Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunder and lightening, lashed Bellary on Thursday. The rain brought down the day temperature considerably. Low-lying areas in the city were inundated and most of the open drains overflowed as rain lashed for about an hour. The city went without power supply for over four hours. — Staff Correspondent

Woman consumes poison, dies

CHITRADURGA: A woman has reportedly committed suicide in Chitradurga district. She has been identified as Siddamma, wife of Hemareddy (55) of Doddasiddavvana Halli in Chitradurga taluk.

According to sources, Siddamma consumed poison on Monday. She was taken to hospital, where she died on Wednesday. Financial problem was said to be the reason for Siddamma taking the step. — Staff Correspondent

Man killed, 13 hurt

in road accident

HASSAN: A man was killed and 13 were injured when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus on its way from Mysore to Kudremukh hit a mini lorry and a tractor near Hallimysore on Holenarsipur and Mysore Road on Thursday. The police gave the name of the dead as Seena Nayak (40) of Gundlupet.
