Eight finals on first day

BANGALORE: Eight finals are scheduled for the opening day of the REVA National Youth Athletics Championship 2005 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. The 100m races in the boys and girls sections would be the highlight.

The meet will be also a selection trial to pick the squad for the Indian team to participate in the World Youth Athletics Championship to be held at Marrakech, Morocco from July 13 to 17. Nearly 466 participants from 22 states will take part, but the number may increase as many states are yet to confirm participation.

Host Karnataka has fielded 58 athletes. Kavya Muthanna, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in the World Youth Games is a big attraction.

Other top Karnataka stars include Pallavi Sukumar, Natasha Sagar, Shilpa Rao and G.N. Bopanna.

Three doctors from the Athletics Federation of India have been deputed to conduct dope tests. Former international Shiny Wilson will be the event observer.

Former Prime Minister, Deve Gowda, will inaugurate the meet on Friday.
