Merchant XI clinches The Sportstar Trophy

MUMBAI: Vijay Merchant XI and Dattu Phadkar XI forced outright victories on the third and final day of the The Sportstar Trophy 2005 MCA Under-19 selection trial tournament at the Cross Maidan on Thursday.

Anand Singh-led Merchant XI defeated Khandu Rangnekar XI by 90 runs to claim eights points, head the four-team table (21) and win the 19th The Sportstar Trophy. The skipper was adjudged `player of tournament'.

Phadkar XI, captained by Siddharth Chitnis, scored an emphatic win over Vijay Manjrekar XI at National CC ground to take points tally to 19 and bag the second place.

Rangnekar XI, resuming at 31 for one was shot out for 89, one over before lunch at Karnataka SA ground. No one crossed 20-run mark, losing wickets to Merchant XI left-arm spinner Sagar Udeshi (14-3-43-5) and off-spinner Sachin Wagh (13.1-6-17-5).

Sanket Chavan top-scored with 70 off 139 balls as Manjrekar XI reach 148 against Phadkar XI, for whom seamer Murtuza Hussain (3-30) and left-arm spinner Dhaval Parab (4-39) did the damage.

Six Man of the Match awardees, given gift coupons worth Rs. 1,000 were: Anand Singh (Merchant XI), Pratap Kavadi (Phadkar XI), Nitesh Bandekar (Manjrekar XI), Sachin Wagh (Merchant XI), Anand Singh (Merchant XI) and Murtuza Hussain (Phadkar XI).

Player of tournament for Ramakant Desai Trophy and cricket kit worth Rs. 15,000: Anand Singh. Best fielder awarded Rs. 1,000 donated by late Bal Mahadalkar: Swapnil Kulye (Manjrekar XI). Veteran journalist S.K. Sham, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.

Vijay Merchant XI 169 and 137 bt Khandu Rangnekar XI 127 and 89 (Sachin Wagh five for 17, Sagar Udeshi five for 43), at Karnataka SA ground, Cross Maidan.

Dattu Phadkar XI 252 and 186 bt Vijay Manjrekar XI 187 and 148 (Sanket Chavan 70; Murtuza Hussain three for 30, Dhaval Parab four for 39), at National CC ground, Cross Maidan.

Points position:

Vijay Merchant XI 21, Dattu Phadkar XI 19, Vijay Manrekar XI 5, Khandu Rangnekar XI 3.
