NEW DELHI: India wants Pakistan to authenticate the border on the Siachen Glacier to ensure that there are no complications after demilitarisation, Chief of the Army Staff, J. J. Singh said here on Thursday. His observation came on a day the Defence Secretaries of both countries began talks in Islamabad on solving contentious border issues, including troop withdrawal from the Siachen Glacier, and marking a border in Sir Creek, a marshy no-man's border between Gujarat and Sindh. Called the actual ground position line (AGPL), the 100-km-long Siachen border begins where the line of control (LoC) ends at point NJ 9842, the last defined area under the 1972 Shimla accord. The Army wants Pakistan to accept the AGPL before both sides start discussing complete pullout from the glacier, where India holds an advantageous position. This is to ensure that, in case bilateral ties sour, either side does not occupy areas held earlier by the other.
