HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to fund outstanding Scheduled Castes students to pursue Intermediate education in private institutions by extending an annual scholarship of Rs.15,000 from the ensuing academic year. The students should have secured 500 plus marks in SSC exam and the annual income of their parents should not exceed Rs. 38,200, the Social Welfare Minister, D.S. Redya Naik, told reporters here on Thursday. Mr. Naik said all SC students with 500 plus marks automatically qualify for admission to the Social Welfare residential colleges but those who wished to join private junior colleges would be paid Rs. 15,000 each. The Government has also decided to enrol pre-matric SC students in hostels without any conditions. Referring to recruitment of wardens in hostels, Mr. Naik said the Government would fill 344 vacancies in two phases. The notification for the first phase recruitment of 194 wardens would be issued in a fortnight. Seven hundred posts of Class IV employees would be filled through outsourcing from a private agency. The Government had in principle decided to regularise the services of 2,898 contract teachers and fill up 3,632 vacancies of teachers in SC Residential Schools Society. The Minister said the budget allocation of social welfare sector had witnessed a 25 per cent increase this year. Over 80 per cent of the budget was being spent on education. About 400 buildings for hostels which were sanctioned last year would be completed in another three months. The Finance Department has cleared a proposal to raise a Rs. 170 crores loan from HUDCO for construction of buildings to 85 residential schools which are presently running in private accommodation. Each of them would cost Rs. 2 crores.
