TIRUMALA: The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilas Rao Deshmukh, on Thursday asserted that his Government was constructing all projects across the Godavari strictly in accordance with the accords and awards of the tribunals concerned. "There is nothing illegal and everything is as per accords," he told newsmen here where he arrived along with his wife and family members on a two-day pilgrimage. Mr. Deshmukh, however, saw no reason for any concern on this count because both Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh were under the rule of the Congress, implying that differences, if any, in the execution of the projects could be sorted out amicably.
A `big drain'
On his Government's abrupt withdrawal of the free power scheme for agriculture after having included it in the manifesto in the last elections, he said that it had become inevitable as the scheme turned out to be a "big drain" on the exchequer. He, however, pointed out that his Government was providing electricity to 25 lakh farmers at a subsidised rate of 20 paise per unit. Earlier in the day, Mr. Deshmukh and his wife participated in `kalyanotsavam' performed to the deity. After an overnight stay, he would participate in the pre-dawn `abhishekam' on Friday before returning to Mumbai. The TTD Board Chairman, T. Subbarami Reddy, and the AICC leader and Rajya Sabha Member, V. Hanumantha Rao, accompanied Mr. Deshmukh.
