HYDERABAD: Five designated judges of the High Court -- Ramesh Ranganathan, Chandraiah, Venkateswara Reddy, Lakshman Reddy and Swarup Reddy -- were sworn in on Thursday.

The first two are the practising advocates from High Court while the other three are from subordinate judicial services. - Legal Correspondent

UTF wants enrolment

week postponed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation (UTF) has appealed to the State Government to postpone enrolment programme by a week, as teachers will not be available at their headquarters due to vacations. The enrolment week is from June 6 to 11.

At a press conference here on Thursday, the UTF general secretary, N. Narayana, said the enrolment week would serve no purpose in the absence of teachers. The UTF also wanted the Government to withdraw its decision of conducting tests before promoting teachers to the post of junior lecturer. - Staff Reporter

TDP activist

attacked

ANANTAPUR: Congress workers allegedly attacked a TDP activist at Bandapalli village in Penukonda mandal on Wednesday night.

According to reports, seven Congress activists allegedly attacked K. Ramanjaneyulu, the former president of PACS, as he had arranged banners and flags of TDP for campaigning by the candidate, P. Sunita, in the village. Ramanjaneyulu was admitted to hospital. - Staff Reporter

Stop Bt cotton seed

sale: BJP Kisan Morcha

HYDERABAD: The BJP State Kisan Morcha president, N. Venugopal Reddy, has lashed out at the Government for allowing the sale of Bt cotton seed and demanded that it be stopped.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said the seed were being sold all over the State and asked whether the companies and the Government were experimenting with the lives of farmers in the State. He urged the authorities concerned to come out with a clear-cut policy on Bt cotton seed and accord permission only after conducting trials. - Special Correspondent

Naxalite held

ELURU: The police on Thursday arrested a militant of the Ramachandran group of the CPI-ML (Janashakti), G. Venkateswara Rao, at Dibbagudem in Jeelugumilli mandal of West Godavari district.

The Jangareddygudem DSP, Chaganti Rama Rao, said that Venkateswara Rao was wanted in a case of extortion. He was also involved in a couple of murder cases reported in Khammam and Warangal districts and an extortion case at Chintalapudi in West Godavari district. - Staff Reproter

Janashakti demand

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (ML) Janashakti has demanded that John alias Hanumanthagari Mallesham, a member of its cadre, be produced in court immediately.

The Janashakti State committee member, Sagar, in a press note on Thursday alleged that the police apprehended 12 Janashakti members, including some leaders, near Himayatnagar in Ranga Reddy district on May 18. Among them, John, was not yet produced in court, he alleged.

He alleged that John was being tortured and taken around police stations in Karimnagar district. - Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: A trough of low pressure area formed over west central Bay of Bengal off coastal Andhra Pradesh on Thursday morning, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here.

Renewal of registration

HYDERABAD: All homoeopathic RMPs have been asked to renew their registration (Andhra and Rayalaseema) at the Andhra Board for Ayurveda and Homoeopathy for the purpose of electing the Central Council member. The additional director (homoeo) is the returning officer for CCH. The doctors are to inform the secretary/registrar of the respective boards of the department of AYUSH, Secunderabad about any change in address and other details before June 10. - Staff Reporter

Panel visit

MADANAPALLE: The milk chilling unit at Gangavaram mandal headquarters, Chittoor district, was visited on May 25 by the Andhra Pradesh Assembly committee headed by the dairy development chairman and Proddutur MLA, Varadarajulu Reddy. They had discussion with the women of Mahila Samakhya of Indira Kranti Pathakam. The cost of milk is Rs. 9.10 per litre and the women said they are collecting 2,038 litres per day from the surrounding 25 villages. Varadarajulu appreciated the endeavour of the women and suggested that the committee finance each woman to purchase a cow, as requested by them. - Correspondent

Tributes to Sunil Dutt

CHITTOOR: The general body meeting of the Zilla Parishad was held here on Thursday. At the beginning, chairperson, Reddemma, and former Minister and MLA, R. Chenga Reddy, expressed their heartfelt grief over the death of Union Minister Sunil Dutt and paid tributes to him for his services to society and country. The meeting observed a three-minute silence in his memory and was adjourned. - Correspondent

DEO's effigy burnt

CUDDAPAH: The AISF functionaries burnt an effigy of the Cuddapah District Educational Officer, Y. Balaiah, at the Collectorate gate on Thursday, accusing him of favouring private educational institutions. The AISF district Vice-President, K. Mallikarjuna Reddy, and Joint Secretary, N. Venkatasiva, charged the DEO with inaction when Sri Chaitanya Children's Academy, a private educational institution, was making admissions and collecting exorbitant fees though it lacked recognition. They demanded that the DEO initiate action against such institutions. - Staff Reporter

BSF constable recruitment

CUDDAPAH: The District Employment Officer, C. Mani, invited applications from the SSC passed candidates aged between 18 and 23 years for selection of 175 BSF constables (General). There is a five-year relaxation for SC/ST candidates, he said in a statement. Candidates of all categories should apply by May 30, producing two passport photographs and Rs. 50 postal order, Mr. Mani added. - Staff Reporter
