`Palmolein case being used as a ploy'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, has accused the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, of using the palmolein import case involving the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran as a ploy for `financial plunder and political trading.'

In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Achuthanandan challenged the Chief Minister to prove his claim that there was no merit in the finding of the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India (CAG) that Mr. Karuankaran had played a major role in the palmolein import deal and that of the Assembly Committee headed by the Congress leader M.M. Hassan that there was corruption in the deal. — Special Correspondent

PSC holding special sitting

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) is holding a special sitting at its head office at Pattom here at 10.30 a.m. on May 31 to examine complaints about its recruitment process. In a statement, the PSC said its chairman, board members and top officials would be present at the special sitting. It had already received nearly 100 complaints from job seekers for being taken up at this programme. Complaints can still be sent to the Joint Secretary, Grievances Redressal Cell, Kerala Public Service Commission, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram, clearly indicating that it is `For the Special Sitting.' — Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: H. Shamsuddin, Principal, Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram, is transferred and posted as Principal Dental College, Kozhikode.

Award for professor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K. Parameswaran Nair, Assistant Professor, McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, has been selected for the Ann Woolcock Award of the American Thoracic Society, according to information reaching his relatives here on Thursday. He is the first recipient of the award instituted in honour of the celebrated professor of Sydney University. — Special Correspondent

MCA admission

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The entrance test for admission to the MCA course 2005 will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode on June 11. The application forms are available at select branches of the Union Bank of India in all the districts of the State. The last date for submitting applications is May 31, according to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. — Staff Reporter

District conference

KOLLAM: The State secretary of the Kerala Cashew Workers Centre, E. Kassim, will inaugurate the 37th district conference of the Kerala Panchayat Employees' Association here on Saturday. Bank union meet

KOLLAM: The general secretary of the All India Bank Employees Association, C.H. Venkatachalam, will inaugurate the 20th anniversary conference of the State unit of the Central Bank Officers Union (CBOU) in Ernakulam on Sunday.

In a statement on Thursday, the CBOU assistant secretary, K. Rajan, said that the general secretary of the Association, S. Nagarajan, would deliver the keynote address at the inaugural function. — Staff Reporter

Move opposed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Higher Secondary School Teacher (Senior) Rank Holders' Association has resented the move to promote teachers of high schools to work in the higher secondary schools in the State. There is no justification in doing so when the Public Service Commission has already drawn up a list of teachers to be appointed to the higher secondary schools, the association said. — Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The Indian Federal Democratic Party (IFDP) leader P.C. Thomas, MP, has sought the resignation of the Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, in the light of the disclosure by the State Vigilance chief. Speaking to presspersons on Thursday, Mr. Thomas alleged that the statement by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, reprimanding the chief of Vigilance Department was at the behest of the Revenue Minister. He said such statements from the Chief Minister would affect the morale of the Vigilance personnel. Denying the senior officials their right to speak to the media amounted to denying the people their right to information, Mr. Thomas said. — Staff Reporter

Thrissur: The 71st birthday celebrations of Anjam Krishnan Namboodiri will be held at the Kausthubham auditorium here on May 27.

Thrissur: Dhanalakshmi Bank has offered facilities to draw Indian currency from 100 branches of the Al Ahalia Money Exchange Bureau in Abu Dhabi, according to a press release from T.R. Madhavan, managing director and chief executive officer of the Bank. — Staff Reporter

Consent given to

admit MBBS students

Thrissur: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has granted permission to the Amala Institute of Medical Sciences to admit 100 students to its third batch (2005-2006) of MBBS course.

The permission is, however, subject to the condition that the admission would be completed within the period stipulated in the Regulations of Medical Council of India, according to a press release from the Institute. — Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

ALAPPUZHA: One person was killed when a superfast bus hit a motorbike after colliding with a lorry near Cherthala Autokast on NH-47 at around 3.30 p.m. on Thursday. As many as 19 persons who include passengers of the bus and the driver and the cleaner of the lorry suffered injuries in the mishap. The deceased has been identified as Siju (21), Parakkal house, Irinjalakuda. The injured had been admitted to the Alappuzha Medical College and Cherthala Taluk Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Epilepsy workshop

KOCHI: The Indian Epilepsy Association and the Cochin Neurological Society are jointly organising the `First Dr. K. S. Mani Memorial Southern Region Epilepsy Workshop' at the Riviera Suite, Thevara, on Saturday.

The former director of NIMHANS, R. M. Varma will be the guest of honour. The Kochi branch of the association was inaugurated in 1993. It is engaged in disseminating information on epilepsy in schools, colleges and service clubs. — Staff Reporter
