NC(I) becoming people's movement in State, says Muraleedharan

Maiden district convention of the party held in Kollam

IN FULL STRENGTH: The State president of the National Congress (Indira), K. Muraleedharan, inaugurating the district convention of the party in Kollam on Thursday.

KOLLAM: The State president of the National Congress (Indira), K. Muraleedharan, has said that his party was growing into a people's movement in the State.

Inaugurating the maiden district convention of the party here on Thursday, Mr. Muraleedharan said the people had started looking to his party with much hope. The party would prove its strength and live up to the expectations of the masses in the coming elections to the local bodies. The Congress would become a nonentity in Kerala after the Assembly elections.

He said the former Chief Minister A.K. Antony had never registered any outstanding performance in Parliament in spite of being a Rajya Sabha Member for 10 years. With such a background, he wondered, what could Mr. Antony contribute during another stint in the Rajya Sabha. He alleged that Mr. Antony was resigning the Cherthala Assembly seat only on June 10 to avoid a byelection there.

``The clamour from a section in the Congress was that if K. Karunakaran and Muraleedharan were expelled, everything would be fine in that party. But even after our exit, is the Congress able to conduct even a single booth election," he asked. "I was expelled for sternly raising the demand for organisational elections.''

He challenged the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, to cite any single achievement with which the United Democratic Front could confidently approach the people and face the next elections. The State was under the grip of a mafia rule. The debt position of the State had zoomed to more than Rs. 42,000 crores. Organisational elections in the NC(I) would be held in October. The district conventions would be completed by June 10 and the membership campaign over by July 31. The membership drive would be a house-to-house campaign.
